I have photos like this and I'm a mediocre amateur at best who doesn't really know how to use his DSLR. Why are the place names secret? Did he not have permission to be there?Īs for the photos, they are all good. Referring to his father's story, why can't Lawless just write Ford. Lawless also doesn't say where any of these pictures are from. The amusement park? They're usually poorly managed, although the one in Louisiana (I'm not sure if it's pictured here or not as there aren't attributes) was destroyed during hurricane Katrina. The mall? Maybe poor management, high rent, or the people moved away. We know why the auto industry is still failing. But these photos don't say much other than no one is home any longer. Why did the mall fail? Why did the speedway fail? Or any of the other places photographed fail? There isn't a story. But instead we made crap at high cost and wondered why it didn't sell. What should have been done was make a better product to justify the cost. If ours costs more that a comparable product, people will buy the other product. If our costs are high, the price has to be high. For American cars, it's because they lag behind our foreign competitors and the labor is much more expensive in America. Or, as I like to think, why buy crap without innovation? Businesses fail for many reasons. His father was pissed that Lawless bought a Prius and didn't support the business that gave his father money to raise him. There is a few paragraphs about how his father worked for an auto manufacturer. When Lawless writes about why a place is gone, it is the death of America, the death of an industry, the death of society itself it seems. But this book is even pessimistic for me, if you read the few lines that are there. I'm not the guy who goes for all of the cutesy, empowering quotes in a perfect square photo. If I had to define myself either optimist or pessimist, I'd say pessimist.
